The Keating Hotel is the first luxury “Boutique Hotel” in San Diego, a blend of Italian styling and sophisticated, personalised service. Designed by Pininfarina, at its first experience of hotel design, the Keating is located in a building dating to 1890 in the Gaslamp Quarter at the heart of the California town.

The hotel has 35 rooms on four floors, 72 beds, eight suites and an interior with an uncluttered, ergonomic, essential style in the best Pininfarina tradition, where the beauty of the forms blends with practicality in every detail.

In May 2008, the Keating was proclaimed the first winner of the Earth-Minded Awards by Hospitality Design magazine and by the American Society of Interior Designers. It received the award because the project provides a possible solution to the issue of sustainability. In June of the same year, the Keating was listed among the “33 best new business hotels” by the prestigious international magazine Fortune, which travelled the world with the design bible “Wallpaper”, looking for the loveliest and most hospitable spots for businessmen.

The result of the conservative restoration of a granite and brick building put up in 1890 (the original construction materials – wood and steel – were recovered and re-used, thus saving thousands of local trees and huge quantities of materials), from the start the Keating was destined to become an environment-friendly hotel.
For the main components of the furnishings for the loft-like rooms and the common areas, the designers used natural materials that can be re-used and recycled. As far as possible they maintained the existing brick and stone facing; they used environment-friendly materials for the painting, they added movement detection devices and energy-saving fluorescent lighting, and used long-lasting metal panels for the ceilings rather than those with a chemical base that have to be replaced sooner or later. Tempur-Pedic mattresses were recycled, modifying the cut and the form, to be used as cushions for the sofas in the bar area located in the basement.
The Keating brings a small taste of Italy to San Diego, from Lavazza coffee machines to Lauretana water, Gancia spumante and Jacuzzi pools, all designed by Pininfarina. The guests are also offered a choice of designer merchandise, and a list of white and red wine, all strictly Piedmontese, selected personally by Paolo Pininfarina.

How to combine aesthetics and practicality

The aesthetic, innovative approach of Pininfarina design blends with the historical details of the building, making the Keating a unique emotional experience. For this project we have created a sort of research laboratory. The hospitality world is extremely interesting: it will be one of our development lines. Hundreds of people enter a hotel like this every day, and they will come into contact with our brand immediately.”
