THE PROJECT

Green thinking

Hybus, the new eco-friendly bus designed by Pininfarina with funding from the Piedmont Regional government, offers public authorities a way to update their urban vehicle fleets by recycling their old vehicles in a context of environmental and economic sustainability. With the Hybus, Pininfarina proposes the conversion of vehicles currently equipped with Euro 0–1–2 engines into buses with serial hybrid power packs. The first demonstration prototype, built to verify the technology and the project’s industrial feasibility, was designed and developed for the Turin City Council, using a Euro 1 Iveco bus from 1994. But for its very nature, the project can be exported to any municipality that is sensitive to the question of protecting the environment. In 2011, the Hybus won the “Premio all’Innovazione Amica dell’Ambiente” award, a nationwide award given by Legambiente for environment-friendly innovation.

The conversion of an old internal combustion engined bus into a hybrid vehicle has two advantages: it reduces pollution in our cities, and makes it possible to cut costs and capital spending. The Hybus offers a saving of approximately 60% compared to the cost of a new hybrid bus. The revamping process also helps to solve the problem of the elimination of obsolete vehicles, which can go back on the road fitted with a small diesel engine that is newer and more ecological (Euro 5, 69 kW 1.3 Multijet), which guarantees the electric traction and battery charging.

Electric traction is provided by two Magneti Marelli electric engines that are the fruit of Kers’ experience in F1. The lithium ion battery pack and the new generation Battery Management System are supplied by FAAM. The management software developed jointly with Pininfarina’s partners recovers energy on the overrun.

The graphics and colours of the interior were also revised.

Technical characteristics of the Hybus modular system

ORIGINAL MODEL

Iveco 490 Euro 1 bus of 1994

“SERIAL” HYBRID DRIVELINE
- Replacement of the original 9,500 cc diesel engine with a Euro 5 - 1.3 Multijet 69 kW power generation unit.
- Installation of electric traction: two Magneti Marelli permanent magneto electric motors.
- Installation of a FAAM lithium ion battery pack.
- BMS (Battery Management System), with regenerative braking.
- Incorporation of the new driveline into the original electrical/electronic design.

INTERIOR
- Restoration of interior outfit.
- Alteration to rear end to accommodate battery support structure.

BODYWORK
- Restoration of existing bodywork parts (painting, replacement of glazing and window and door seals).
- Proposed new colour and bodywork graphics.

Do not vary:
- Total vehicle weight and distribution on the axles.
- Braking system and power assisted steering (the hydraulic pump and compressor are powered electrically).

Pininfarina has always been a partner of the motor industry, and is well aware of the need to find the most effective and convenient solutions to reach increasingly stringent environmental goals and to reduce polluting emissions.

It is a commitment that has focused increasingly on research over the years: the adoption of hybrid or full-electric drive systems for individual and collective transport systems; the use of lighter, recyclable alternative materials; active and passive safety and computerised traffic management.

Hybus was presented at MobilityTech 2011, the international forum on technological innovation for the development of mobility and transport, and therefore represents an important milestone in Pininfarina’s global green strategy.

The Hybus was developed by Pininfarina’s green technology experts in collaboration with three partners: Magneti Marelli, FAAM and the Municipal Transportation Board of the City of Turin.
