ETR 500

WHAT

The ETR 500 was the first Italian project for a high speed train back in 1985, for which Pininfarina was responsible for the stylistic and aerodynamic research.

HOW

The ETR 500 project was an enterprise of huge technological value for the standards of the time; compared to the French TGV, the ETR 500 had to be able to travel at over 300 km/h on existing tracks used by normal passenger trains.

Pininfarina was in charge of the stylistic and aerodynamic analysis.

The research focused in particular on the definition of a shape with a low drag coefficient. It set out to limit the phenomena of aerodynamic interference characteristic of high-speed operation.

The development of the matrix was monitored in its tiniest detail in order to minimise the high pressure on the front door and overspeed on the sides of the locomotive.

A special measurement technique was adopted during the project, which used a completely computerised traversing gear and a special 14-bore probe that measured local speeds and pressure in the aerodynamic field of the vehicle being tested, independent of the direction of the speed.

Based on pressure and speed maps generated using this technique, it was possible to compare different locomotive shapes and to choose the one that was most suitable to achieve the project’s goals.

WHY

The ETR 500 appeared in 1985 as the result of a joint project by Ferrovie dello Stato, Breda and Pininfarina, whose goal was to develop the first Italian high speed train.

It was a demanding project, all the more so in view of the characteristics of the rail infrastructure of the day.

It was a challenge that Pininfarina responded to with far-reaching stylistic and aerodynamic research, which led to the creation of a model with a high technological impact, that was extremely flexible in terms of operating requirements and could transport up to 700 people on each train.
